I remember all apart from:

* Milk delivered by horse drawn cart
* Police boxes on street corners
* RAC boxes
* Slide rule
* Outside toilets
* Frying pan lollies (which I've never heard of)

A rag and bone man used to visit our street weekly when I was a kid back in the '70s. Dunno what happened to him.

Mark, I was still in school back end of the 70s and they were just changing from slide rule to calculators, you were lucky not to have to go through that torture.

Iluvnufc, yep that must be a Geordie thing.

Joanne, were you in the attic til you were 18? I could list even more but I thought others would know of things that aren't around anymore.

Joanne
There is real Police Box (Tardis to you lol) near the Edinburgh train station and there are probably still a few others around the UK

Joanne: Police box From Wikipedia has lots of info and great links like this one.

Gary: Youtube - Geordie' s lost his liggie 1973. From Brian Johnson before he joined AC/DC.

Where as the telephone was on the outside of the Police Box, so you could call the police (not the Doctor), the telephone was inside of the RAC or AA Box and all Motorist members were given a key in case they broke down in desolate areas where the boxes were mostly situated ie on roads crossing the pennines.

Gary - How dare ye! I was 18 in 1994, so unlike you I didn't write with a feather and walk the streets barefoot!

Also, not everything you have in England and Scotland was in Ireland too.

we didnt have streets, just snickets.

Joanne Casey said...

Gary - See, i don't even know what a snicket is.

ILuvNUFC, thanks for the Police box link, I really did think they were from Doctor Who :-)

What about the ice man who came around in the summer delivering ice for the kitchen ice box - before electric refrigerators! Or the scissors and knife man who came around with a horse-drawn cart, sharpening your scissors or knives for a fee? Don't you remember them?
