Pubs In Halifax?.On A Saturday Night! Gary.Do You have a death-wish...? Hey, I know Halifax well (you know i live in Hebden Bridge but was born in Halifax?).Do you come this way often, or is this a "one-off"?It's a bit short notice for me THIS Saturday, but next time we should meet up & I will give to a personal tour!
This time, around..i will give you my mini-internet Guide!
Do You know Halifax at all?Are you coming in via Car or Train? Are you going into the Middle of Town?
Smack in the middle of town (around Bull Green) are all the Clubs& kiddy-pubs.........I assume you are wanting a proper pub.with proper beer & proper people? The Best Pub in the middle is probably LEWINS.just off the roundabout ,on the right of the road to Burnley/Rochdale etc.
Halifax center is on a slope........the further downhill you go the better the Pubs.Try The
Upper George Just below Georges Square.(5 minutes walk from Lewins). The only Pub in Halifax center on a Saturday that doesnt have/need Bouncers.Try also The Sportsman nearby.Rough as arseholes.Crap Beer.Scary -Hairy locals.Live Band (heavy metalish........).but not without a certain charm............
The bottom of Town by The Railway Station is the best place for real pubs.Did you ever see the film "Saturday Night& Sunday Morning"?The opening sequence shows the Local Hero walking out of Halifax Railway Station with suitcase in hand! Turn left out of the station.100 yards on your right is
The Pump RoomThe Landlord is a Southerner, but otherwise its fine.
50 yards further on your left is
The Three Pigeons .Further on (impossible to give directions) is THE SHEARS.but you will have to ask for precise directions...................My Mother-In-Law lives nearby!
HOWEVER.............The best kept secret of Halifax Pubbery is a place called THE BIG 6 .You would really need a car for this? Its near Wainhouse Tower...Near THE MOOR (aka Savile Park) no other pubs in a mile radius. Its in the middle of a row of terraces.2 houses knocked into one.Quite surreal! Its like havng a Pint in Albert Tatlocks Living Room!
So Enjoy! And next time give me some notice & we could meet up?To Be quite frank Halifax is quite crap for Pubs.My advise is try Sowerby Bridge instead!
